Bulb or strip: the voltage on the label decides

Strip lights are a different product from bulbs and they run on several voltages. USB-powered 5 V strips suit TV backlights and shelves, 12 V and 24 V strips need a matching adapter, and some mains models plug straight into 120 V. A 12 V strip will be damaged by a 24 V supply. Choose the adapter by adding the strip's wattage and keeping a margin, and note the controller type: simple remotes handle brightness and color, while Bluetooth and app kits add music sync.

Shape codes, lumens and the 'equivalent' figure

For bulbs, the shape code matters: A19 is the familiar household bulb, S14 a small decorative one, MR16 and PAR30 are spotlights with reflectors. Lumens tell you brightness, with 450 to 800 lumens covering the 40 W to 60 W equivalents that most lamps need. Lifetime figures such as 25,000 or 50,000 hours are rated lives under test conditions, and a bulb in a hot enclosed fixture will not reach them. Light appearance ranges from warm white to cool white and multicolor, so match it to the other lights in the room.

Questions about LED Bulbs and Strip Lights: Shapes, Voltages, Colors

Can an LED replace an MR16 halogen spotlight?
Usually, but the voltage must match. Most MR16 sockets are fed by 12 V transformers, and some LED versions need a compatible electronic transformer or a direct 12 V driver. Check the beam angle and base, commonly GU5.3, too.
How long can an LED strip run from one power supply?
Voltage drops along a long strip, so the far end looks dimmer, usually beyond about five meters on a single feed. Power the strip from both ends or add feed points, and size the adapter to the strip's total wattage with spare capacity.
Are LED strip lights safe to use outdoors?
Only if they are rated for it. Look for an IP65 or higher rating with a silicone coating, and keep the power supply dry and indoors or in a sealed box. Adhesive backing also struggles on rough or dusty surfaces, so add clips.
