Mattress size first, then duvet cover or full set
Start with the mattress. Twin is about 38 by 75 inches, full 54 by 75, queen 60 by 80 and king 76 by 80, and bedding is cut to match. A duvet cover set is sized to the comforter inside it: a queen set around 90 by 90 inches and a king around 104 by 90 inches. Check the piece list, since 'set' may include a cover and two pillow shams, or just the cover.
Thread count, fabric and protective encasements
Cotton and polyester-cotton blends are the usual fabrics for covers. A thread count near 200 gives a crisp, breathable percale feel, and very high counts are often marketing rather than comfort. Fleece throws, commonly about 50 by 60 inches, are soft and quick drying but can pill. Vinyl mattress and box-spring protectors, sold by gauge such as 6, keep out dust mites, spills and bed bugs when zipped fully, but they rustle and trap heat, so many people add a fitted sheet over them. Measure mattress depth before choosing an encasement.
Questions about Bedding Sets and Throw Blankets: Sizes and Fabrics
- What does thread count tell me about sheets and covers?
- It is the number of threads per square inch. Around 200 suits a crisp, light percale, while much higher numbers can come from multi-ply yarns and not feel better. Fiber quality and weave affect softness as much as the count.
- Will a duvet cover fit my existing comforter?
- Match the comforter's size to the cover, such as queen with queen. Corner ties or loops inside the cover keep the comforter from shifting. A comforter that is much smaller than the cover will bunch, and a larger one will not fit.
- How big is a standard throw blanket?
- A typical throw is about 50 by 60 inches, enough to cover one person on a sofa or the foot of a bed. Choose an oversized throw of 60 by 80 inches or more if two people will share it.
