Feeder style decides which birds visit
Hopper or house feeders shelter mixed seed from rain, tray feeders suit ground-feeding birds but get wet, and tube feeders with small ports suit finches. Hang feeders near shrubs for cover but with a clear view, and clean them regularly. Feed is labelled by animal, so a squirrel and critter blend is not the same as wild-bird seed. Look for weatherproof construction and trays that are easy to clean; sets of two give you a spare.
Birdhouses and baths: hole size, drainage and materials
Real nest boxes are wooden, with drainage and ventilation holes and a removable panel for cleaning; the entrance hole size is species specific, around 1.125 inches for chickadees and 1.5 inches for bluebirds. Decorative metal birdhouses, such as a bumblebee shape, are ornaments and can overheat. Birdbaths work best shallow with a rough surface for grip, and need frequent cleaning and refilling.
Questions about Bird Feeders and Wildlife Supplies
- How often should I clean a bird feeder?
- Clean feeders every week or two with hot soapy water, then rinse and dry fully. Wet seed grows mould, which can harm birds. Remove old seed and clean more often in warm, damp weather.
- What hole size does a nest box need?
- It depends on the species: about 1.125 inches suits chickadees, while around 1.5 inches suits bluebirds. A hole that is too large lets larger birds and predators in, so match it to the bird you want.
- Where should I hang a bird feeder?
- Place it within a few metres of shrubs or trees so birds can dash to cover, but in the open enough that cats cannot ambush them. Add window decals nearby to cut collisions, and use a baffle to deter squirrels.
