Garden and Outdoor Living

Start with the space: yard, patio or balcony

This department is organised by what you want to do outside. Gardening starts in Gardening Supplies & Decor, with watering and lawn tools in their own aisles. Seating and entertaining live in Outdoor Furniture & Patio Decor. Solar gear, grills, lighting, sheds and greenhouses, and pools and spas each have their own aisle. Measure the space first, note sun and wind exposure, and check whether a balcony or rental limits grills or structures.

Power and water: plan the supply before the product

Outdoor products need a way to be powered or watered, so settle that early. Solar lights need a spot with direct sun, low-voltage landscape kits need a transformer and cable runs, and mains-powered pumps, heaters and cleaners need a weatherproof outlet protected by a GFCI. Look for an IP rating on anything electrical, and check hose reach and water pressure before choosing watering gear. Lights and other small items often come in packs of two to twelve, so compare brightness per light in lumens, not per pack.

Questions about Garden and Outdoor Living

Which frame material lasts longest outdoors?

Aluminium and stainless steel resist rust, and powder-coated or galvanised steel lasts well while the coating is intact. Plain iron rusts quickly once scratched. Plastic does not rust but can fade and turn brittle under strong sunlight unless UV stabilised.

What do lumens tell me about outdoor lights?

Lumens measure total light output. A few lumens give a soft glow for paths and decks, hundreds suit steps and entrances, and flood lights run to 1,000 or more. Colour temperature in kelvin sets warm or cool white.

How much space should I leave around a shed or grill?

Leave clearance for doors to open and for walking round the item, and keep grills well clear of fences, eaves and walls. Check local rules for sheds and structures, which may limit size or distance from boundaries.
