Compostable, biodegradable or just a trash bag?
Bag labels differ. Compostable bags are designed to break down in composting conditions and may carry a certification mark, while biodegradable has no set time or conditions, and a scented trash bag is ordinary plastic. Thickness is listed in mils: 0.71 mil is thin for light scraps, 1 mil or more handles wetter loads. Match the capacity in gallons to the bin, from 2.6 gallons for a counter caddy to 64 gallons for an outdoor cart. Check that your local green-waste collection accepts compostable bags.
What an electric kitchen composter really does
A small electric kitchen composter, such as a 3 litre model, usually dries and grinds scraps rather than composting them in the garden sense; the result is best mixed into soil or a compost heap and left to mature. Check capacity, noise, whether a filter needs replacing and what foods the maker says to avoid. Outdoor compost needs a mix of wet green scraps and dry brown material, such as leaves or cardboard.
Questions about Compost Bins and Compostable Bags
- Are compostable bags the same as biodegradable bags?
- No. Compostable bags are designed to break down in composting conditions and may carry a certification mark. Biodegradable has no set time or conditions, so it can mean very little. Check the label and your local collection rules.
- What bag size fits my kitchen caddy?
- Match the bag's gallon or litre rating to your bin. Counter caddies take roughly 2.6 to 4 gallons, standard kitchen bins 8 to 13 gallons, and outdoor carts about 64 gallons. A bag slightly larger than the bin folds over the rim.
- Can I put electric composter output straight on my plants?
- Check the manufacturer's guidance. Many kitchen units dry and grind food waste into a material that is best mixed into soil or a compost heap and left to mature, rather than applied thickly around plants.
