Weight limits, ages and the ground underneath

Start with who will use the set. Weight ratings are given in pounds and may refer to one seat, one platform or the whole structure, so read which. Trampolines are sized by diameter, and an enclosure net around the edge helps catch falls from the bounce area. Surface matters as much as equipment: mulch, rubber tiles or sand cushion falls far better than grass or soil, and none of them makes up for a set that is too tall or complex for the child using it.

Clear space, anchors and assembly time

The footprint on the box is not the space you need. Keep a clear zone around the structure, commonly at least 6 feet (about 1.8 m) on every side and more in front of and behind swings, and away from fences, trees and hard edges. Anchor frames and swing legs into the ground with stakes or weights as the manual directs, because a swinging child can lift an unanchored leg. Zip lines need two solid end points and a brake, and many sets take two adults an afternoon to assemble.

Questions about Backyard Playsets, Swings and Trampolines

How much space does a swing set need?
Allow the footprint plus a clear safety zone around it, commonly at least 6 feet (1.8 m) at the sides and more at the front and back where swings travel. Check overhead for branches and wires, and keep the area free of fences and paving.
Does a trampoline need an enclosure net?
A net reduces the risk of falls off the edge, which are a common cause of trampoline injuries. Check that it attaches firmly to the frame or posts, closes securely, and leaves no gap near the bottom where a child could slip through.
What does a zip line weight rating cover?
It is the maximum rider weight the line, trolley and brake are designed for, and it assumes correct tension and solid anchor points such as healthy trees or posts. Keep the line well clear of obstacles at the end, and use the brake as described.
