Build volume, enclosure and which plastics you can print

Build volume is the first spec to read, because it caps the size of any single part. Cubes of roughly 150 to 260 mm are typical, with a few larger machines. An enclosed chamber is the second. Open frames print PLA and PETG happily, but ABS and similar plastics warp in drafts, so they want a closed, ideally heated chamber. Check the maximum hot-end temperature too. A hot end rated near 300 degrees C or above allows tougher materials, and the filament diameter, almost always 1.75 mm, should match what you plan to buy.

Speed claims, multi-colour systems and what is in the box

Speeds such as 600 or 1000 mm/s describe peak travel, not how fast a real part finishes; acceleration, cooling and part geometry decide that. Treat the number as a rough class, not a promise. Multi-colour and multi-material systems, such as an automatic spool changer, add flexibility but also waste material when switching. Titles in this group also include 3D pens, accessories and laser-engraving hybrids, so confirm the product type, and whether features such as auto bed levelling or a bundled spool are included, before comparing machines.

Questions about Desktop FDM 3D Printers for Home, Class and Studio

Is an enclosed 3D printer worth it?
It matters if you want ABS, ASA or nylon, which shrink and crack in cool air. It also reduces noise and keeps pets and fingers away from hot parts. For PLA and PETG alone, an open frame is usually fine.
What does 1.75 mm mean on a printer listing?
It is the filament diameter the extruder is built for. Spools must match: a 1.75 mm printer cannot feed 3 mm filament, and the reverse. Most desktop machines use 1.75 mm, but always confirm in the specification.
What file do I send to a 3D printer?
You design or download a model, usually in STL or 3MF format, then a slicing program converts it into machine instructions called G-code. Makers supply their own slicer, and many printers also accept common third-party ones.
