What the vacuum can safely pick up
Only machines rated as wet-dry can collect liquid; a dry-only vacuum that draws in water risks motor damage and an electric shock hazard. A wet-dry unit needs the right filter for each mode, usually a foam sleeve or none for liquids and a paper or cartridge filter for dust. Multi-surface wet-dry cleaners wash and pick up in one pass on hard floors, while floor blowers do not vacuum at all: they speed up drying after mopping.
Hoses, cords and batteries must match the machine
Accessory hoses are sold by inside diameter and length, and the cuff must fit your vacuum's inlet, so measure the opening or read the model list before buying a replacement. For corded machines, check the voltage and plug type against your outlets. For cordless models, battery capacity is given in amp-hours or watt-hours, and on the same machine a larger battery runs longer. Motor wattage tells you how much power a machine draws, not how well it picks up, so compare airflow or water lift when they are given.
Questions about Floor Scrubbers, Sweepers and Vacuums
- Can I vacuum liquids with any vacuum cleaner?
- No. Only models marked wet-dry or wet/dry are built to handle liquid, with the motor protected from the tank. A standard dry vacuum can short out or be damaged by water, so check the listing before cleaning spills.
- Does higher wattage mean stronger suction?
- Not directly. Watts describe electrical input. Suction depends on motor design, airflow, hose diameter and seals, so a lower-wattage machine with good airflow can outperform a higher-wattage one. Look for airflow or water lift figures when available.
- Will a replacement hose fit my vacuum?
- Only if the diameter and the end fitting match. Wet-dry vacuum hoses commonly come in 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2-1/2 inch diameters. Adapters exist, but check that the listing names your vacuum or its inlet size.
