Start with where the credit will be spent. A platform card adds funds to the wallet of a console, PC launcher or VR headset ecosystem, and that wallet then buys games, add-ons and subscriptions from the platform's own storefront. A game-specific card, such as one for Roblox, gives credit that only that game or publisher accepts. The two look alike on a listing, but credit never crosses between ecosystems, so confirm the platform before you click.
Region matters as much as platform. Cards are normally issued for one country and currency, and the account that redeems them has to be set to the same region. A card for the wrong region is refused at redemption, and the region on many gaming accounts cannot be changed freely once purchases or subscriptions are attached. Match the region note on the listing to the account's settings, especially when a console was set up abroad.
Face values come in fixed steps, so choose one that matches the intended purchase: a single new game, an expansion, or a subscription period. A small remainder after a purchase is normal and carries on in the wallet. A few listings show an age label such as an ESRB rating; that describes the content the platform sells and does not limit the card itself. For children, set spending limits and purchase approvals in the console's family settings before the credit goes in, so a full balance cannot be spent in one sitting.
