Optical power, work area and speed

Power is quoted in watts, and the number needs care. Advertised figures sometimes refer to electrical input, while what matters for cutting is the optical output of the laser, which is lower. Modules sold as 10 W, 20 W or 40 W differ greatly in how thick a material they can cut and how fast they engrave. For marking wood, leather and card a small unit is enough; cutting thicker wood needs more optical power, slower passes and air assist.

Work area and speed shape what you can make. The work area, from compact 130 by 140 millimeters to around 400 by 400, sets the largest piece in one pass. Maximum speeds are quoted in millimeters per minute, and real engraving runs far slower than the maximum. A fine focused spot, as small as a few hundredths of a millimeter in some listings, gives sharper detail but is not the same as high power.

Ventilation, eye protection and parts that fit one module

A laser is a fire and eye hazard. Wear glasses rated for the laser's wavelength, run the machine only while you watch it, keep a fire extinguisher close and ventilate or extract fumes. Never cut PVC, vinyl or unknown plastics, since they can release harmful gas and damage the machine. Know what a material is before it goes under the beam, and keep reflective items such as bare metal out of the beam path.

Accessories are usually specific to a module. An air-assist nozzle kit listed for a family of 20, 30 and 40 W modules will not necessarily fit a smaller unit, and replacement lenses and other parts each have their own sizes. Consumables kits vary in what they bundle, so read the contents list. Check the model name in the title against yours, and how the machine connects to your computer.

Questions about Laser Engraving Machines and Accessories

Can a diode laser engraver cut metal?
Not in the sense of cutting sheet metal. Diode lasers of this class engrave and cut wood, leather, card and some dark plastics, and can mark certain coated or anodized metals. Cutting metal needs far more powerful industrial lasers. Check the listing's materials guide before assuming a job is possible.
What does air assist do?
Air assist blows a stream of air at the point where the beam hits the material. It clears smoke and debris, reduces flare-ups and charring, and gives cleaner cuts and engraving. It is especially helpful when cutting wood, and nozzle kits are made for particular laser modules.
Do I need a computer to run a laser engraver?
Most machines are driven by software on a computer over a cable, and some also run jobs from a memory card or through a touchscreen. Check the connection options and the software compatibility in the listing, as the design program matters as much as the machine.
