3M 231 Masking Tape for Painting

3M 231 masking tape uses a crepe paper backing with a rubber adhesive. It comes in a tan colour and measures 72mm wide by 55m long. The roll is suited to general masking tasks in painting and decorating work.

Sustained Heat Resistance Up to 250°F

The tape performs at temperatures up to 250 degrees F and down to 70 degrees F. Its 7.6 mil thickness and 28 lb/in tensile strength help it hold during extended exposure. Elongation of 10 percent allows some movement without tearing.

Single-Sided Paper Construction Limits

Single-sided adhesive on paper backing restricts use to temporary holding and masking. Clean removal time is not rated, so residue risk varies by surface and duration. The pack contains 24 rolls for larger jobs.

Questions about this item

Does the 7.6 mil crepe-paper backing handle 250 °F without leaving residue after a full day?

The rubber adhesive on the Series 231 tape is rated to 250 °F maximum performance temperature and is designed for clean removal, though a specific clean-removal time is not rated.

What surface preparation or primer is needed before applying this 72 mm wide roll?

No primer is required; the single-sided rubber adhesive bonds directly to clean, dry surfaces such as painted walls, wood trim or metal.

Will the 28 lb/in tensile strength hold when masking over old lacquer or varnish?

The 28 lb/in tensile strength and 10 % elongation give strong hold on cured lacquer or varnish, provided the old finish is sound and free of wax or grease.
