Every roll has a width, a length and a core. Desktop dispensers for invisible and office tape take rolls on a 1 inch core, while hand-held and heavy-duty dispensers take 3 inch cores, and a roll with the wrong core will not seat. Widths are quoted in inches or millimeters: 3/4 inch is a common office width, 1.88 inch (48 mm) is the usual width for sealing cartons, and painter's tape usually runs about 1 or 2 inches wide. Packing tape thickness is given in mils; thicker film resists splitting.

Packing tape is a film with acrylic or hot-melt adhesive: acrylic copes better with temperature swings, while hot melt grips cardboard quickly. Cloth tape is woven for strength and tears by hand.

How long can painter's tape stay on a wall?

Follow the removal window printed on the roll, which is usually stated in days. Sunlight, heat and freshly painted or textured surfaces can shorten it. Pull the tape away slowly at a low angle to protect the paint.

What thickness should packing tape be?

Thickness is given in mils. Light boxes seal well with standard film, while heavy cartons or rough handling call for a thicker, heavier grade. Press the tape firmly across the seam and onto both side panels.

Is electrical tape the same as duct tape?

No. Electrical tape is a stretchy vinyl made to insulate wire joints, while cloth or duct tape is a woven fabric tape built for strength and repairs. Using duct tape as insulation on live wiring is unsafe.
