Adds two SATA 150 ports with RAID 0, 1 and JBOD via a 64-bit 66 MHz PCI slot
The 3ware 8006-2LP is a PCI SATA expansion card that adds two SATA 150 ports and hardware RAID 0, 1 or JBOD to a server or workstation. It targets IT professionals who need to attach a small number of SATA drives without moving to a newer bus standard. The card fits a standard low-profile slot and uses a 64-bit 66 MHz PCI interface with an on-board RISC processor and XOR engine.
The controller draws modest power from the PCI slot and runs passively with no fan fitted, so it adds no audible noise to a rack or tower chassis. Heat output is low enough for typical server airflow without extra cooling measures. The 66 MHz PCI ASIC handles RAID calculations in hardware, keeping host CPU load negligible during normal operation.
The kit includes a low-profile bracket that lets the card install in 2U or slim enclosures where a full-height bracket would not fit. Driver support covers Windows 2000, XP and 2003 plus Red Hat, SuSE and FreeBSD, so the same card can be moved between legacy Windows and Linux hosts without hunting for extra software. StorSwitch switched architecture allows up to four cards in one system for straightforward capacity growth.

Insert the card into a 64-bit 66 MHz PCI slot, connect up to two drives to the internal SATA 150 ports, then install the driver for Windows 2000, XP or 2003 or for Red Hat, SuSE or FreeBSD; the step often missed is loading the RAID driver before creating arrays.
The on-board RISC processor and XOR RAID engine have no user-serviceable parts; only the attached SATA drives may need replacement if they fail or exceed the supported 1 TB capacity limit.
The PCI 66 MHz bus and 1.5 Gbits/sec SATA 150 links cap sustained throughput at 150 MB per second per drive, so that bandwidth ceiling is reached before the processor or RAID engine becomes a bottleneck.
