USB 2.0 to RS232 DB9 Serial Cable
This cable converts a USB Type A port into a standard 9‑pin DB9 RS‑232 connection. It uses the FTDI FT232RL chipset for broad driver support across Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP, 2000, Mac OS X 10.6 and above, and Linux. Tinned copper conductors and triple shielding maintain signal integrity at up to 1 Mbps. The adapter draws power from the USB port and requires a one‑time driver installation.
For legacy serial equipment only
Suitable for technicians and engineers connecting barcode scanners, label writers, industrial modems, GPS units, PDAs or older digital cameras that still use a DB9 port. Not intended for users who need a native USB device, high‑throughput data links, or connections to equipment that lacks a serial interface.
FTDI FT232RL chipset decides compatibility
The FTDI FT232RL chipset determines which operating systems recognise the virtual COM port without extra configuration. If your target system lacks drivers for this chipset, the cable will not enumerate as a serial port.

Questions about this item
How can I verify the FTDI FT232RL chipset is recognised after plugging the cable in?
Open Device Manager on Windows or run dmesg on Linux and look for a new COM port labelled FTDI USB Serial Port; the port appears once the driver loads.
What comes in the box and do I need a separate driver download?
The package contains the 1 m USB Type A male to DB9 male cable; the FTDI driver must be installed once from the FTDI website before first use.
Which cable length should I choose for a standard desktop-to-device link?
The 1 m length suits typical bench or rack connections; a 2 m version exists under part 20218 if more reach is needed.
