What it is

The Apricorn Aegis Padlock is a 16 TB external solid-state drive with USB 3.0 connectivity. Hardware-based 256-bit encryption protects stored data without software installation. The drive is suited to professionals who need large, portable capacity with built-in security.

Who it suits

Ideal for users handling large media libraries, backups or sensitive project files who value plug-and-play encryption. Not suited to buyers who want more storage than 16 TB or who require a faster interface than USB 3.0 for sustained workloads.

Capacity and headroom

Sixteen terabytes holds millions of images, hundreds of hours of video or up to a million songs with room to spare. Sequential transfers run at USB 3.0 speeds, so very large single-file moves will take longer than on faster interfaces.

Questions about this item

Does the Aegis Padlock 16 TB require any external power adapter to operate over its USB 3.0 connection?

The drive draws power directly from the USB 3.0 port, so no separate power adapter is needed for normal operation.

Will the Aegis Padlock 16 TB work at reduced speed if I connect it to an older USB 2.0 port on my current laptop?

Yes, the USB 3.0 interface is backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports, though transfer rates will be limited to the older standard's maximum.

How can I confirm the 256-bit hardware encryption is active on the Aegis Padlock 16 TB after I set my PIN?

The drive's built-in keypad shows a locked or unlocked status LED, and the drive remains inaccessible until the correct PIN is entered, confirming encryption is enforced.
