What the SB8200 is and who it serves

The ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 is a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem built for residential plans up to 2000 Mbps. It targets households that want to own their hardware instead of paying monthly rental fees and need a pure modem without integrated Wi-Fi or voice features.

Practical limits of the DOCSIS 3.1 interface

The modem bonds 32 downstream by 8 upstream DOCSIS 3.0 channels and adds 2 downstream by 2 upstream OFDM channels under DOCSIS 3.1. Reaching the full 2000 Mbps plan speed requires the provider to issue a second IP address for link aggregation across the two 1-Gigabit Ethernet ports.

What this replaces and when the upgrade pays off

The SB8200 replaces a rented DOCSIS 3.0 gateway or an older owned modem that cannot bond OFDM channels. The jump is worth it when the household subscribes to a multi-gigabit cable tier and wants to stop rental charges while keeping the flexibility to choose a separate router.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the SB8200 for a 2 Gbps cable plan or is a lower-tier model enough?

The SB8200 supports DOCSIS 3.1 and is rated for plans up to 2000 Mbps, so it matches a 2 Gbps tier; a DOCSIS 3.0 modem would cap well below that.

What does the 2000 Mbps rating actually deliver when the modem is connected to my router?

Two 1-Gigabit Ethernet ports provide the wired link; combined throughput can approach 2000 Mbps when link aggregation is used, while a single port tops out at 1 Gbps.

How does the DOCSIS 3.1 interface limit real-world speed on my provider's network?

DOCSIS 3.1 enables the 2 Gbps plan ceiling, but actual throughput depends on the provider's channel allocation, network congestion and whether a second IP address is provisioned for full 2 Gbps operation.
