Internal DVD burner for legacy media

The ASUS DRW-24D5MT is a new internal DVD burner with a black tray-loading front panel. It writes DVD+R and DVD-R discs at 24X and CD-R at 48X. The drive suits users who still archive data or install software from optical discs on desktop PCs.

SATA interface limits throughput and OS support

The drive connects via SATA and reads DVD-ROM at 16X and CD-ROM at 48X. Access times are 145 ms for DVD and 125 ms for CD. Official driver support ends at Windows 10, so newer operating systems may require generic drivers or may not recognise the hardware at all.

Tray mechanism and M-DISC archival capability

The tray-load design needs clear front-panel space in a 5.25 inch bay. M-DISC support enables archival-quality writes rated for 1000 years or more. E-Green technology closes the drive application when idle, saving over 50% power during inactivity.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the tray-load or slot-load version of the ASUS DRW-24D5MT?

This model uses a tray-load mechanism; no slot-load variant is listed for this MPN.

What does the 24X DVD+R figure mean when I am actually burning a disc?

It indicates a maximum write speed of 24X for DVD+R media; real-world time depends on the disc quality and system performance.

The drive uses SATA — does that limit the burning speed in practice?

SATA provides ample bandwidth for the 24X DVD and 48X CD write speeds, so the interface does not cap performance.
