18-inch FHD+ 144Hz gaming laptop

The ASUS ROG Strix G18 is an 18-inch gaming laptop built around a 16-core AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5050 GPU with 8GB GDDR7 memory. It ships with 64GB DDR5 RAM and a 1TB PCIe SSD. The 1920 x 1200 display runs at 144Hz for smooth motion in fast-paced titles. Windows 11 Home and an Office 2024 licence are pre-installed.

USB 4.0 Type-C and HDMI 2.1 connectivity limits

Two USB 4.0 Type-C ports support DisplayPort and G-SYNC; one also handles power delivery. Two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports provide 10 Gbps data rates. HDMI 2.1 FRL drives external 4K displays at high refresh rates. Wired networking tops out at 1000 Mbps over RJ45. Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) triple-band 2x2 and Bluetooth 5.3 handle wireless links. No SD card reader is fitted.

Upgrade access and common issues

The factory seal is opened by engineers for RAM or SSD upgrades before shipment, so the 1TB PCIe drive and 64GB memory are user-accessible after purchase. Removing the bottom panel requires small Phillips screws and careful prying; clips around the perimeter can snap if forced. Reassembly must align the Wi-Fi antenna cables and battery connector precisely, or the system will not post. Thermal paste on the CPU and GPU should not be disturbed unless a repaste is planned.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 1TB PCIe SSD or add a second drive for more space?

The laptop ships with a single 1TB PCIe SSD. If you need extra capacity later, you can install an additional M.2 drive yourself or ask the shop to add one before dispatch.

What does the 144Hz refresh rate mean for actual gameplay?

The 18" FHD+ panel refreshes at 144Hz, so fast motion in shooters or racing titles stays sharp without ghosting, provided the RTX 5050 can push frame rates that high.

Which USB standard do the Type-C ports use and what can they drive?

Both Type-C ports are USB 4.0 and support DisplayPort, G-SYNC and power delivery, letting you run external monitors or docks at full bandwidth.
