External Slim DVD Writer for Legacy Systems

The ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U is a new external slim DVD drive that writes DVD-RW media at 8X speed. It connects via USB and supports operating systems from Windows XP through Windows 7 and Server 2008, plus Mac OS X 10.5. The black diamond-cut chassis houses password-controlled disc encryption and a three-step drag-and-burn software interface. It suits users who need optical media support on older hardware.

8X DVD-RW Write Speed Determines Suitability

The single specification that decides fit is the 8X DVD-RW write rating. This drive does not write Blu-ray discs and offers no higher DVD speeds. Buyers who need faster DVD recording, Blu-ray authoring or support for modern operating systems beyond Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.5 should look elsewhere. The 512 MB RAM recommendation applies only to the bundled encryption and burning software.

Sustained Writing at Constant Angular Velocity

During long burns the drive maintains a steady 8X constant angular velocity rather than accelerating toward a peak. This keeps heat and vibration low inside the slim enclosure, reducing buffer underruns on older machines. The diamond-cut casing acts as a passive heat spreader, so sequential multi-disc sessions remain stable without active cooling.

Questions about this item

What does the 8X DVD-RW write speed mean for actual disc burning time?

The 8X rating indicates the maximum write speed for DVD-RW media; actual burn time varies with the disc brand, the host system performance, and the software used.

Which interface does this external drive use and what does it limit?

The drive connects through a USB port and is powered from that same connection, so the USB bus supplies both data and power.

What are the physical dimensions and mounting needs for this slim drive?

It is a slim external enclosure in black that sits on a desk; no internal bay or mounting brackets are required.
