What this microphone does

The Atomos StudioSonic is a supercardioid condenser shotgun microphone built for on-location interviews, run-and-gun shooting and field reporting. Its polar pattern isolates voices while reducing surrounding noise. The dual-mode design works wirelessly over 2.4 GHz or through a locking USB-C digital link to cameras, monitors and computers. It suits creators who need broadcast-grade capture in unpredictable environments.

Connectivity and power in practice

A locking USB-C port and a 3.5 mm TRRS/TRS jack let you plug into a wide range of devices without adapters. Digital output runs at 48 kHz and 24 bit for studio-grade recordings. Battery life reaches 50 hours in wired mode and 10 hours wirelessly, while the receiver lasts 8 hours on a charge. The bundled premium case protects both units during transport and storage.

Build and daily handling

The microphone body uses aluminium alloy and the receiver uses ABS, giving a rugged feel suited to frequent location work. Locking USB-C prevents accidental disconnects during moving shots. The 3.5 mm connection covers cameras and recorders that lack USB audio support. The case keeps the kit organised for quick deployment on set.

Questions about this item

How long will the built-in battery last before I need to replace the microphone?

The rechargeable battery is not user-replaceable; the microphone runs up to 50 hours wired or 10 hours wireless per charge, and the receiver lasts 8 hours.

What limits continuous wireless recording first — battery or signal range?

Battery life is the first limit; the microphone gives 10 hours wireless and the receiver 8 hours on a single charge.

Does the microphone get hot or make fan noise during all-day streaming?

No fan is fitted; the aluminum-alloy body stays cool during extended use because power draw is low.
