KVM extender module connects VGA video and USB 2.0 keyboard or mouse over an RJ-45 link
The Avocent AVRIQ-USB2 is a KVM extender module designed for IT administrators managing servers in data centres or secure rooms. It enables remote keyboard, video and mouse control over a single network cable, extending the reach of an AutoView switch beyond standard cable limits. This unit suits environments where direct rack access is restricted or impractical.
The module draws power from the connected switch and server ports, adding no separate power supply or active cooling to the rack. It uses a single RJ-45 link to carry VGA video and USB 2.0 signals up to the distance supported by the host switch, keeping cabling simple and noise-free. The lightweight 0.27 kg form factor adds minimal strain to port connections.
A captive HD-15 VGA plug, a USB Type-A plug and an RJ-45 jack are built into the module, removing the need for separate adapter cables. This fixed assembly ensures consistent pin-out alignment and reduces potential failure points at the server end. The bundle covers video, keyboard and mouse pathways in one compact unit.

Plug the HD-15 VGA and USB Type-A male connectors into the server, then run a Cat5/6 cable to the AutoView switch; the step often missed is ensuring the switch port is configured for USB 2.0 and VGA before powering on.
The RJ-45 jack and USB Type-A plug see the most insertions; the VGA HD-15 pins can bend if cables are swapped frequently, so those connectors typically wear first.
The VGA and USB 2.0 signals share the same Cat5/6 link, so the practical ceiling is the 15-metre USB 2.0 range; beyond that, keyboard and mouse latency rises before video degrades.
