3 Inch Schedule 40 Steel Pipe Nipple
This 3 inch nominal pipe size nipple connects threaded NPT fittings in air, gas, non-potable water, oil and steam lines. The welded Schedule 40 steel construction handles 300 psi at 150 degrees F and 150 psi steam at 360 degrees F. It suits industrial and commercial piping systems requiring a 3 1/2 inch overall length.
Replaces Damaged or Short Threaded Sections
Use this nipple to replace a corroded, cracked or undersized section of 3 inch Schedule 40 pipe without rethreading the whole run. The continuous weld and Grade A steel restore the pressure rating of the original line. The jump is worth it when the existing threads are intact but the pipe body has failed.
NPT Threads Limit Orientation and Reuse
Tapered NPT threads seal by interference, so final alignment is fixed once the joint is tight; you cannot rotate the fitting afterward without breaking the seal. Reusing the same threads repeatedly deforms the taper and reduces holding power. The 3 1/2 inch length offers no room for a union or swivel if adjustability is needed.

Questions about this item
What thread size and schedule rating does the 3 1/2 in nipple require for a leak-free fit?
The fitting uses NPT threads on both ends and is rated for Schedule 40 pipe, matching a 3 in nominal size with a 3 1/2 in outside diameter.
How do you install the steel nipple without damaging the continuous weld or anodized coating?
Apply thread sealant to the NPT ends, hand-tighten, then finish with a wrench no more than two turns; over-torquing can distort the black anodized finish and stress the welded joint.
When should the nipple be replaced given its 300 psi at 150 °F and 150 psi steam at 360 °F ratings?
Inspect annually for corrosion, thread deformation or coating wear; replace immediately if pressure tests exceed the rated limits or if the continuous weld shows any cracking.
