2.5 Gbps headroom on Cat 6 or better

The RTL8156B chipset negotiates 10, 100, 1000 and 2500 Mbps speeds under IEEE 802.3bz and supports a 2.5 G Lite mode at 1 Gbps data rate. Full 2.5 Gbps operation requires Cat 6 or higher cabling, a 2.5 G capable router or switch and the Realtek driver; on Cat 5e the link falls back to 1 Gbps.

Upgrade from a 1 Gbps onboard port

The adapter replaces a built-in Gigabit Ethernet connection when the system lacks a free expansion slot or when the existing port is damaged. The jump is worthwhile only where the network infrastructure already delivers 2.5 Gbps; on older 1 Gbps switches the adapter operates at the same ceiling as the original port.
