Immersive VR Lens for APS-C

The Canon RF-S 7.8mm f/4 STM Dual Lens is built for the Canon EOS VR System to capture stereoscopic 3D 180° photos and videos. Its 60° field of view matches human vision, making it a practical choice for augmented reality creators using APS-C EOS R mirrorless cameras. The kit includes a 58mm filter set, cleaning kit and lens cap keeper for immediate use. Buyers needing a standard single-lens for conventional photography will not be served by this specialised dual-optic design.

Silent STM Autofocus Operation

A gear-type stepping motor drives fast, quiet and synchronised autofocus suitable for both stills and video recording. Canon Dual Pixel CMOS AF provides precise performance while full-time manual focus allows instant override without switching modes. An electronic focus ring and a left-right focus adjustment switch give independent control over each lens for creative flexibility. The optical formula uses two ultra-low dispersion elements and Super Spectra Coating to minimise chromatic aberration, ghosting and flare.

Close-Focus Capability and Filter Support

Minimum focusing distance reaches 5.9 inches, enabling detailed close-up work within immersive scenes. The 58mm front filter thread accepts circular polarisers, ND filters or protective glass for light management in varying conditions. Compact and lightweight construction keeps the rig portable for extended VR production sessions. Users requiring longer reach or zoom versatility for traditional filmmaking should consider alternative lens types.

Questions about this item

How do I mount the RF-S 7.8mm f/4 STM Dual Lens on my APS-C EOS mirrorless camera and what step is often missed?

Align the RF mount index marks, twist until it clicks, then set the left-right focus adjustment switch before shooting so both lenses are synchronised.

What maintenance will the dual-lens system and its 58mm filter thread need over time?

Clean both front elements and any fitted filters with the supplied cleaning kit; check the electronic focus ring and STM motors for dust if autofocus becomes hesitant.

What limit appears first during extended 3D 180° VR recording sessions?

The 5.9-inch minimum focusing distance restricts how close subjects can be, so near-field detail hits that boundary before optical performance degrades.
