Compact security appliance for small sites

The Cisco Meraki MX68W combines a stateful firewall with integrated 802.11ac wireless in a desktop chassis. It targets branch offices or retail locations that need secure connectivity for up to fifty clients without a rack.

Firewall throughput caps at 450 Mbps

The single figure that determines suitability is the stateful firewall throughput of 450 Mbps. Sites with internet circuits faster than that will not realise their full bandwidth through this unit.

Fanless desktop design runs silently

With no moving parts the appliance produces no audible noise and draws minimal power in normal operation. The compact footprint of 1.1 by 11.2 by 6.8 inches allows placement on a shelf or wall mount without active cooling.

Questions about this item

What does the 450 Mbit/s wireless rate mean for actual devices on the network?

The 450 Mbit/s figure is the maximum physical-layer rate under the IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac standards. Real-world throughput per client will be lower due to overhead, interference and distance.

How does the Gigabit Ethernet interface limit wired performance?

Each of the 10 RJ-45 ports supports Gigabit Ethernet, so wired links cap at 1 Gbit/s full duplex. The stateful firewall throughput is rated at 450 Mbps, which becomes the practical ceiling for inspected traffic.

What physical space and mounting options does the desktop unit need?

The chassis measures 1.1 inches high, 11.2 inches wide and 6.8 inches deep. It ships with a mounting kit for wall installation and includes two external omni antennas that extend above the body.
