DIY NVME upgrade kit for select MacBooks
This adapter lets owners of compatible MacBook Air and Pro models from 2013 through 2017 install a standard M.2 NVME drive. It replaces the proprietary Apple SSD connector with a 12+16 pin interface. The kit is intended for users comfortable with opening their laptop and performing a clean macOS installation.
12+16 pin connector matches original Apple socket
The black circuit board plugs directly into the existing storage slot on supported MacBook Air 11 and 13 inch models A1465 and A1466, plus MacBook Pro Retina 13 and 15 inch models A1502 and A1398. It accepts only PCIe NVME M-Key or B+M Key SSDs and will not work with any SATA based drive. macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later must already be installed before fitting the adapter.
Passive design adds no noise or power draw
The adapter contains no active components, fans or controllers, so it does not increase system thermals or acoustic output. Power consumption is limited to the NVME drive itself. Buyers needing SATA SSD support or wishing to upgrade machines running macOS versions earlier than 10.13 cannot use this product.

Questions about this item
Does the 12+16 pin connector limit the SSD to PCIe 2.0 speeds on a 2013 MacBook Pro?
The adapter passes the native PCIe lanes of the host Mac; 2013-2014 models run at PCIe 2.0 x2 while 2015-2017 models run at PCIe 2.0 x4, so the connector itself does not impose an extra bottleneck.
What physical clearance does the adapter need inside a MacBook Air 13-inch Mid 2017?
It occupies the original SSD slot and accepts single-sided M-Key or B+M Key modules; the logic board and battery leave enough room for standard-length cards without extra spacers.
What is the installation sequence that avoids a non-booting drive on a MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch 2014?
Update to macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later while the original Apple SSD is still installed, shut down, swap the drive onto the adapter, then boot into Internet Recovery to format and install the OS on the new NVMe drive.
