Capture Adapter

The Corn Electronics RCA cable is a USB 2.0 capture adapter that converts composite video and stereo audio into a digital stream for recording on a Windows PC. It targets users who want to digitise analogue sources such as VHS tapes, camcorders or game consoles without installing an internal card. The package includes VideoStudio 8.0 SE editing software for immediate post-production.

Resolution Limits

The single specification that decides suitability is the maximum capture resolution: 720x480 at 30 fps for NTSC and 720x576 at 25 fps for PAL. Both formats are supported over the same four-connector cable. Footage above these frame sizes cannot be captured, so high-definition sources are not served by this device.

Build Integration

The adapter draws power from the USB 2.0 port and requires no external supply, freeing a mains socket and keeping the setup portable. A 30 cm USB tail and 17 cm four-input cable reach nearby ports without strain. The software runs on Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7 (32-bit) with a Pentium III 800 MHz CPU and 600 MB free disk space.

Questions about this item

What resolution and frame rate will I actually get when capturing NTSC video through this adapter?

NTSC captures at 720x480 resolution and 30 frames per second.

What does the USB 2.0 interface limit in real use?

USB 2.0 caps the transfer bandwidth, which determines the maximum capture resolution and frame rate the device can sustain.

How much space do the adapter and its 4-input cable need to fit behind my PC?

The USB capture adapter is 8 cm long and the 4-input cable extends 17 cm, so allow roughly 25 cm of clearance behind the port.
