Which ends does the job need: 3.5 mm, Y or plain RCA?

A plain two-plug RCA cable, red for right and white for left, links a CD player, receiver or amplifier. A 3.5 mm to RCA cable takes a phone, laptop or PC headphone output to the red and white inputs of an amplifier or powered speakers. A 1 male to 2 female Y adapter splits one signal, such as a subwoofer output, to two inputs. A turntable is a special case: unless it has a built-in preamp, it needs a phono input or a separate preamp, and no cable choice changes that.

Shielding, length and plug build

Double shielding keeps hum and radio noise out, which matters more as runs get longer or pass near power cables. Keep audio and power cables apart, and cross them at right angles if they must meet. Conductor claims such as oxygen-free copper or gold plating mostly affect corrosion resistance rather than sound at line level, so a tight-fitting plug and sound strain relief count for more. A yellow-ended RCA cable is meant for composite video, and digital coaxial audio is best carried on a 75-ohm cable.

Questions about RCA Stereo Audio Cables

Can I plug a turntable into a normal RCA input?
Only if the turntable has a built-in preamp switched on. Otherwise its signal is very weak and needs a phono preamp, either the amplifier's phono input or a separate unit. Without one the sound is faint and thin, whatever cable you use.
Does gold plating or oxygen-free copper improve sound?
Not audibly at line level. Gold plating resists corrosion, and oxygen-free copper is simply low-impurity copper. Shielding, a secure plug fit and a sensible length make the practical difference.
Which end of a 3.5 mm to RCA cable goes where?
The 3.5 mm stereo plug goes into the source, such as a phone or computer headphone jack, and the red and white RCA plugs go to the amplifier or speaker inputs. Red is the right channel and white is the left.
