Internal laptop DVD writer

The Dell GS40N is a tray-loading SATA optical drive built for Precision M4800 M6400 M6500 M6600 and M6800 mobile workstations. It reads and writes CD-RW and DVD+RW media and reads DVD+R discs. The 0.75 MB buffer helps maintain a steady stream during burns.

Sustained write behaviour

At 24x for CD and 8x for DVD±R the drive holds its rated speed across a full disc rather than dropping back after the first zones. Dual-layer DVD±R DL writing runs at 6x and remains stable through the layer change. The small buffer means the host must keep data flowing without long pauses.

Thermals noise and power

As a slim internal unit it draws power directly from the laptop SATA port and adds minimal heat to the chassis. Operational noise is typical for a tray mechanism spinning at 8x DVD speed and stays low during read-only tasks. No external power adapter is required.

Questions about this item

How much noise and heat does the GS40N produce when burning discs continuously?

The tray-loading GS40N runs at standard laptop optical-drive noise levels; its 0.75 MB buffer helps keep the motor speed steady during long write sessions.

What must my laptop already have for this GS40N to work?

A SATA connection and a tray-loading optical bay that accepts the Dell Precision M4800 M6400 M6500 M6600 M6800 form factor.

Will the GS40N read and write media created on older CD-RW and DVD+R drives I still use?

Yes — it reads CD-RW and DVD+R at 24x and 8x, and writes CD-RW at 24x and DVD+RW at 8x, matching those legacy formats.
