Inspiron 3520 for everyday work

The Dell Inspiron 3520 ships new with an 11th Gen Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor, 8GB of DDR4 memory and a 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD. The 15.6 inch IPS panel runs at 1920 x 1080 resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit is pre-installed for immediate use.

Thermals and power in normal use

A 65W power supply feeds the system while a 3-cell 41 WHr battery handles mobile operation. Integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics share system memory, keeping heat output modest during office tasks and video playback. The 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 modules add minimal thermal load.

Behaviour under sustained load

The four-core CPU can reach 4.2 GHz turbo speeds when workloads demand it, though the slim 0.74 inch chassis limits prolonged peak performance. Fan noise rises as the cooling system manages extended compile or render sessions. Buyers needing discrete graphics or higher multi-core throughput should consider other configurations.

Questions about this item

How do I install more memory in the 3520 and which step is often missed?

Open the bottom cover, insert a DDR4 SO-DIMM into the free slot, then seat it fully until the side clips click — the click is the step people skip.

What part will need replacement first during long-term ownership?

The 3-cell 41 WHr battery will lose capacity before the 1TB PCIe SSD or the soldered 8GB DDR4 memory.

What thermal limit appears first when the i5-1135G7 runs at 4.2 GHz for extended periods?

The 65 W power adapter and the slim 0.74 in chassis limit sustained turbo, so clock speeds drop to stay within the cooling envelope.
