Business laptop for mobile professionals

The Dell Latitude 5490 is a 14-inch notebook built for frequent travel and client meetings. Its 8th generation Intel Core i7-8650U processor delivers four cores and eight threads for responsive multitasking. Windows 10 Pro provides enterprise-grade management and security features. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 handles everyday visual tasks and external displays.

Thermals and power in daily use

The 15W quad-core CPU balances performance with efficiency to extend battery runtime on the road. Integrated graphics eliminate the heat and noise of a discrete GPU during typical office workloads. The 256GB NVMe SSD operates silently and draws minimal power compared to mechanical drives. Fan activity remains low during document editing, web browsing and video conferencing.

Specification that decides fit

8GB of DDR4 memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded after purchase. Buyers who need more memory for virtual machines or large datasets should consider a different configuration. The single 256GB NVMe drive offers fast boot and load times but limited capacity for local media libraries. A 14.0-inch 1920 x 1080 non-touch screen defines the visual workspace.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 256 GB NVMe M.2 SSD in the Latitude 5490, and what step do people often miss?

The M.2 slot is under the bottom cover; remove the screws, insert the drive at an angle, then secure it with the retention screw — many forget that final screw and the drive lifts off the contacts.

What maintenance will the 8 GB DDR4 memory need later?

The memory is soldered to the board, so no user upgrade or replacement is possible; keep the system clean and monitor usage in Task Manager to avoid excessive paging.

What limit appears first during sustained workloads on the Core i7-8650U?

The 15 W TDP causes the processor to throttle clocks after extended heavy loads, so sustained performance settles below the 1.9 GHz base frequency.
