Business-ready 14.0" laptop

The Dell Latitude 7490 is a compact business laptop powered by an Intel Core i7-8650U processor at 1.90GHz with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. It ships with Windows 11 Pro installed and includes a charger. The 14.0-inch display runs at 1920x1080 resolution. This configuration suits professionals who need a portable Windows machine for everyday office tasks.

Thermals and power

The Intel UHD Graphics 620 integrated GPU handles basic visual output without a discrete graphics card. The U-series processor is designed for efficient power use in thin chassis. Under typical office workloads the system runs quietly and maintains acceptable surface temperatures. Battery life will vary depending on screen brightness and workload intensity.

Upgrade considerations

This unit replaces an older laptop that struggles with current Windows updates or lacks solid-state storage. The jump is worthwhile when moving from a mechanical hard drive to the 256GB SSD for faster boot and application loading. It is not suited for buyers who need more storage, higher memory capacity, discrete graphics performance, or a newer processor architecture.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 256 GB SSD into the Latitude 7490 and what step is often missed?

Remove the bottom cover, insert the drive into the M.2 slot at an angle, press it flat and secure the retention screw; the step often missed is reinstalling the thermal pad onto the controller before closing the case.

What maintenance will the 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD need over time?

The soldered 8 GB RAM requires no maintenance; the 256 GB SSD benefits from occasional firmware updates and keeping at least 10 % free space for wear levelling.

Which limit appears first during sustained loads on the i7-8650U with Intel UHD Graphics 620?

The processor hits its thermal ceiling first, causing clock speeds to drop before the integrated graphics or SSD become bottlenecks.
