Mobile workstation for frequent travellers

The Dell Latitude 7490 is a 14.0-inch laptop built around an Intel Core i7-8650U quad-core processor running at 1.9 GHz with turbo up to 4.2 GHz. It ships with Windows 11 Pro 64-bit, 8 GB DDR4 memory and a 1 TB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 drives the 1920 x 1080 FHD non-touch display.

Thunderbolt 3 dock and dual-display flexibility

A single Thunderbolt 3 USB-C port carries power, data and video to compatible docks, while the full-size HDMI output adds a second external screen without extra adapters. Three USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, a microSD card reader and Bluetooth 4.2 handle peripherals and wired networks. The 720p webcam supports video calls on the move.

Everyday productivity within integrated graphics

The 1 TB NVMe drive provides fast boot and ample space for documents, local databases and media libraries. Eight gigabytes of DDR4 handles typical office multitasking, browser tabs and light virtualisation. Demanding 3D rendering, modern gaming or heavy video editing will exceed the shared-memory UHD 620 capability. Buyers who need discrete GPU performance or user-upgradeable memory should consider other form factors.

Questions about this item

Will the 8 GB DDR4 memory need to be upgraded for heavier workloads?

The laptop has 8 GB of DDR4 soldered to the board with no spare slot, so capacity cannot be increased later.

What thermal limit appears first when the i7-8650U runs at its 4.2 GHz turbo boost for long periods?

The quad-core processor will hit its thermal throttle point before sustained 4.2 GHz clocks can be maintained.

How loud does the cooling fan get and how hot does the chassis become during an all-day workload?

Under continuous load the fan spins up to an audible level and the underside of the magnesium chassis becomes noticeably warm.
