Target user profile

The Dell Latitude E5420 is a 14.0" notebook built around a dual-core Intel Core i5 processor running at 2.20GHz with 6 MB L3 cache. It ships with 16 GB of DDR3 memory and a 128 GB solid-state drive. Windows 10 Home is pre-installed, and the chassis includes a DVD-RW optical drive. This configuration suits office workers, students or mobile professionals who need a lightweight Windows machine for document editing, web browsing and video calls.

Included peripherals and software

The integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics drive both the internal 1366 x 768 LED panel and external monitors through VGA and HDMI outputs. A built-in webcam supports conferencing, while the multi-touch touchpad handles navigation. Wired networking uses 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet and wireless connectivity comes from the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 adapter. A Trusted Platform Module 1.2 security chip provides hardware-based encryption support for business environments.

Compatibility checklist

Verify that your essential applications run on Windows 10 Home and that 128 GB of internal storage meets your workload before adding external drives. The 14.0" non-touch display uses a 1366 x 768 resolution, so confirm this pixel density fits your visual preferences. Ensure any required legacy media can be read by the DVD-RW drive. The system uses DDR3 memory and a 2.5" drive form factor, which limits future internal upgrades to those specific standards.

Questions about this item

Will the 128 GB SSD or the DVD-RW drive need replacement first?

The 128 GB SSD has no moving parts and typically outlasts the mechanical DVD-RW drive, which can wear out after repeated disc use.

What limits performance first during a long compile or render on the dual-core i5?

The dual-core processor with 6 MB L3 cache reaches full utilisation before the 16 GB DDR3 memory or integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics become bottlenecks.

How loud and hot does the chassis get when the Intel HD 3000 runs all day?

The integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics share system memory and produce modest heat; the single fan spins up intermittently, keeping surface temperatures warm but not uncomfortable.
