14-inch business notebook for office work

The Dell Latitude E5420 is a 14.0-inch charcoal-gray laptop built around an Intel Core i7 2nd Gen quad-core processor running at 2.20 GHz with 6 MB L3 cache. It ships with 16 GB of DDR3 memory, a 1 TB 2.5-inch hard drive and Windows 10 Pro 64-bit pre-installed. The HD+ LED-backlit display delivers a 1366 x 768 resolution in a non-touch widescreen format. Integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics handle everyday visual tasks.

Fan noise and heat under typical loads

In normal office use the integrated graphics and efficient mobile chipset keep heat output modest, so the internal fan runs quietly most of the time. The 65 W-class power adapter supplies enough headroom for the CPU, memory, hard drive and optical drive without pushing the thermal solution hard. Power draw stays low during document editing, web browsing and video playback, helping the chassis remain comfortable on a desk or lap.

DVD-RW, TPM 1.2 and wired networking included

The built-in DVD-RW drive lets you read and write CDs and DVDs for legacy media or software installers. A Trusted Platform Module 1.2 security chip provides hardware-based encryption key storage for business data protection. Gigabit Ethernet gives a stable wired connection when Wi-Fi is congested or unavailable. The HDMI and VGA outputs support external monitors or projectors without adapters.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 16 GB DDR3 RAM modules in the Latitude E5420 and which step is often missed?

Remove the bottom access panel, insert the DDR3 SODIMMs at an angle until the clips snap, then replace the panel; the step often missed is pressing both clips firmly until they click to seat the modules fully.

Which component in the E5420 will need replacement first under normal use?

The 1 TB 2.5-inch hard drive is the mechanical part most likely to wear out before the solid-state components.

What thermal limit appears first when the Intel Core i7 2.20 GHz quad-core CPU runs sustained loads?

The integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics and CPU share a cooling solution, so the package temperature limit is reached before any discrete GPU threshold.
