Product identity

The Dell Latitude E5520 is a 15.6-inch business laptop powered by a dual-core Intel Core i7 processor running at 2.20GHz with 6MB L3 cache. It ships with 8GB of DDR3 memory, a 2.5-inch 500GB SATA hard drive and Windows 10 Pro 64-bit pre-installed. Integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics drive the HD+ LED backlit display. A DVD-RW drive, TPM security chip, VGA and HDMI outputs complete the configuration.

Who this suits

This unit fits office workers and students who need a legacy Windows 10 environment with an optical drive and Trusted Platform Module for basic security compliance. The HDMI and VGA ports simplify connections to older projectors or external monitors. Buyers who require solid-state storage, a dedicated graphics processor, a touchscreen or more than 8GB of memory should look at other platforms.

Deciding specification

The 2.5-inch 500GB SATA hard drive is the single component that determines whether this laptop meets a workflow; it offers generous capacity but lacks the speed of solid-state storage. If the workload depends on fast boot times or rapid application launches, this drive type will be a bottleneck.

Questions about this item

How is the 2.5" 500 GB SATA hard drive installed, and which step do people often get wrong?

Remove the bottom service cover, slide the drive into the caddy, secure the four mounting screws, then connect the SATA data and power ribbon; the step most often missed is forgetting to transfer the caddy brackets from the old drive.

What maintenance or replacement will the DDR3 memory need later?

The two SO-DIMM slots support up to 16 GB total; if you need more capacity later, replace the existing modules with a matched 8 GB + 8 GB DDR3 kit.

What limit appears first during sustained heavy workloads on the Intel HD 3000 graphics?

The shared system memory and thermal envelope of the integrated GPU throttle clock speeds before the CPU reaches its own thermal ceiling.
