Purpose-built Rugged Laptop

The Dell Latitude Rugged 5420 is a 14.0 inch laptop engineered for field work in hazardous environments. It ships new with Windows 10 Pro, an Intel Core i5-6300U dual-core processor, 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD. The non-touch FHD display resolves at 1920 x 1080 and uses integrated graphics for everyday tasks.

Thermals and Power

The chassis measures 1.29 inches in height, 13.66 inches wide and 9.63 inches deep, weighing from 4.9 lbs with a single 3-cell battery. This compact sealed design manages heat from the 2.4 GHz base and 3.0 GHz turbo processor without exposed vents. Integrated graphics keep power draw modest during typical office and data-entry workloads.

Build Integration

Connectivity includes USB 3.0 Type-A and Type-C ports, HDMI, native serial, RJ-45 gigabit Ethernet and a removable PCIe storage bay. Optional modules add a second serial port, VGA, DisplayPort, Fischer USB or a second RJ-45 jack. An SD card slot and SIM card slot support field data capture and LTE connectivity for first-responder networks.

Questions about this item

How is the 512GB PCIe storage bay removed or installed, and which step do people get wrong?

The storage bay slides out after releasing its latch; the step often missed is fully seating the drive before locking the latch back.

What maintenance will the 16GB memory and 512GB SSD need later?

The 16GB memory is soldered and not upgradeable; the 512GB SSD can be swapped via the removable bay when capacity or speed demands change.

Which limit appears first during sustained loads on the i5-6300U?

The dual-core 2.4 GHz processor with 3.0 GHz turbo hits thermal throttling before the 802.11ac wireless or integrated graphics become bottlenecks.
