Rugged 14-inch laptop for field work

The Dell Latitude Rugged 5424 is a 14.0-inch non-touch laptop built for outdoor and industrial use. It runs Windows 10 Pro on a dual-core Intel Core i3-7130U processor at 2.7 GHz with 8 GB of memory and a 256 GB SSD. Integrated graphics drive the 1920 x 1080 FHD display.

Thermals and power in normal use

The chassis measures 1.75 inches high, 13.66 inches wide and 9.63 inches deep, weighing 5.5 lbs with a single 3-cell battery. Passive cooling handles the low-power U-series chip during typical office tasks. Wireless 802.11ac and Bluetooth keep the system connected without adding thermal load.

Behaviour under sustained load

A removable primary PCIe storage bay and a secondary SATA bay allow storage swaps without tools. Optional modules include a Blu-ray or DVD drive, a third SATA bay, RJ-45 gigabit Ethernet, serial, VGA, DisplayPort or Fischer USB. Native serial, HDMI, USB 3.0 Type-C and two USB 3.0 Type-A ports stay available during long shifts.

Questions about this item

How is the primary PCIe drive installed in the Latitude Rugged 5424, and what step is often missed?

The primary drive sits in a removable PCIe bay. The step often missed is fully seating the drive and tightening the captive screw before closing the latch.

What maintenance will the 256GB SSD and 8GB memory need later?

The SSD has no moving parts and needs no scheduled service. The 8GB memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded, so no replacement is required.

What limit appears first during sustained use of the i3-7130U at 2.7GHz?

The dual-core processor will hit its thermal ceiling first, causing clock-speed throttling under heavy continuous loads.
