Compact SFF desktop for everyday work

The Dell OptiPlex 3010 Small Form Factor desktop fits on a tight desk and ships with Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit, a USB keyboard and a USB mouse. An Intel Core i5-3470 quad-core processor at 3.2 GHz and 8 GB of DDR3 memory handle office applications, web browsing and video playback for students and home-office users. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 2500 drives a display through VGA or HDMI. A 16X DVD±RW drive reads and writes optical media.

Build context: expansion and connectivity

The SFF chassis accepts low-profile add-in cards and holds a 3.5" 1 TB SATA hard drive for bulk storage. Four DIMM 240-pin slots are populated with 8 GB of DDR3 RAM. Gigabit Ethernet provides wired network access. The included peripherals and restore media mean the system is ready to run without extra purchases. Buyers who want more storage or a discrete graphics card will need a larger case and a higher-wattage power supply.

Sustained-load behaviour

The 3.2 GHz quad-core CPU maintains its clock speed during long document-editing sessions, video streams or background updates. Intel HD Graphics 2500 handles 2D desktop composition and hardware-accelerated video decode without thermal throttling in the small chassis. The 1 TB hard drive delivers steady sequential throughput for large file copies. The platform is not suited to extended 3D rendering, heavy compilation or modern gaming workloads.

Questions about this item

How long can the i5-3470 run at 3.2 GHz before the SFF case limits thermal performance?

The small form factor chassis relies on a single internal fan; under continuous full-core load the CPU will throttle once its temperature target is reached, typically after several minutes of sustained 3.20 GHz operation.

What noise and heat levels should I expect when the system runs all day?

The 16X DVD±RW drive and 3.5" 1TB hard drive are the main acoustic sources; the integrated Intel HD Graphics 2500 and Gigabit Ethernet add minimal heat, so idle noise stays low and case temperature remains moderate during typical office workloads.

Which display cable do I need to use the HDMI output on this OptiPlex 3010?

A standard HDMI-to-HDMI cable connects the rear HDMI port to any monitor or TV with an HDMI input; the system also provides a VGA port if your display only supports that interface.
