Compact Business Desktop for Office Work

The DELL OptiPlex 7040 SFF is a small-form-factor desktop built around an Intel Core i5-6500 processor running at 3.2GHz with turbo up to 3.6GHz. It ships with 32GB of DDR4 memory and a 1TB solid-state drive. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 drives up to two displays via DisplayPort and HDMI.

Suited for General Productivity Not for Demanding

This system suits office workers, students and home users who need responsive multitasking, fast boot times and reliable wired or wireless networking. The low-profile expansion slots limit graphics upgrades to half-height cards. Buyers who need high-end 3D performance, multiple full-size add-in cards or an internal optical drive should look at a larger chassis.

32GB Memory and 1TB Storage Handle Typical Workloads

The 32GB DDR4 capacity provides ample headroom for dozens of browser tabs, office suites and background services. The 1TB SSD holds the operating system, applications and a large document library with room to spare. Intensive video editing, large-scale data analysis or modern gaming will exceed the integrated graphics and the constrained power envelope of the SFF design.

Questions about this item

Do I need to buy a monitor separately to use the HDMI or DisplayPort video outputs on this OptiPlex 7040 SFF?

Yes, a monitor is not included, so you must provide your own display with an HDMI or DisplayPort input to use the Intel HD Graphics 530 video outputs.

Will my older USB 2.0 peripherals work with the front and rear USB ports on this desktop?

Yes, the front panel has two USB 2.0 ports and the rear panel has two USB 2.0 ports alongside four USB 3.0 ports, so USB 2.0 devices are fully compatible.

How can I confirm the Intel Core i5-6500 is running at its 3.2 GHz base speed after setting up Windows 10 Pro?

Open Task Manager, select the Performance tab, and check the CPU clock speed; it should show 3.2 GHz at idle and can reach 3.6 GHz under load with Turbo Boost.
