Legacy desktop for specialised software

The Dell OptiPlex 745 SFF desktop PC runs Windows XP Professional SP3 32-bit with all drivers pre-installed. It is built for organisations that must maintain legacy applications or industrial equipment that cannot migrate to modern operating systems. The small form factor chassis fits into tight workspaces.

Compact chassis with legacy I/O

The black small-form-factor case includes a 3.5-inch floppy drive and a DVD+/-RW optical drive for media that modern systems omit. Eight USB 2.0 ports, serial and parallel connectors, and integrated 10/100/1000 networking provide the peripheral support older hardware expects. Integrated graphics drive a display through the onboard video output.

Direct replacement for ageing XP workstations

This unit replaces a failed or obsolete OptiPlex 745 or similar-era Pentium D workstation without re-imaging or driver hunting. The 3.0 GHz Pentium D processor, 4GB DDR2 memory and 500GB hard drive match the original specification so validated software loads immediately. The jump is worth it when downtime costs exceed the price of a like-for-like spare.

Questions about this item

Does the integrated 10/100/1000 network port cap real-world throughput at 1000 Mbps?

Yes, the gigabit Ethernet interface is limited to a maximum of 1000 Mbps in practice.

Will a standard half-height PCI card fit inside the small form factor chassis?

The small form factor case only accepts low-profile or half-height expansion cards; full-height cards will not fit.

How is Windows XP Professional installed and which step is often missed?

The OS comes pre-installed and fully activated with SP3 32-bit; the step users often miss is running Windows Update to apply post-SP3 security patches.
