OptiPlex 790 Mini Tower

The Dell OptiPlex 790 Mini Tower is a desktop computer built around an Intel Quad-Core i5-2400 processor running at 3.10GHz. It arrives with 8GB of DDR3 memory and a 512GB 2.5-inch solid-state drive. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit is pre-installed, and a USB keyboard and mouse are included. This system suits home-office workers and students who need a ready-to-use PC for everyday productivity.

DDR3 memory and integrated graphics

The motherboard uses 240-pin DDR3 DIMM slots and supports a maximum of 16GB of RAM. Graphics are handled by the integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000 engine, which relies on system memory and offers only basic display output. There is no discrete graphics card installed, and the Mini Tower chassis limits the length and power draw of any add-in card you might consider later.

512GB SSD headroom and upgrade path

The 512GB solid-state drive provides fast boot times and enough space for the operating system, office applications and a moderate media library. Users with large video collections or extensive game libraries will find the capacity restrictive. The system can accept up to 16GB of DDR3 memory, doubling the supplied 8GB, which helps with heavier multitasking but does not improve 3D performance.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 8 GB or the 16 GB DDR3 option for the OptiPlex 790?

The 8 GB DDR3 fitted is enough for Windows 10 Pro and everyday multitasking; the 16 GB DDR3 maximum helps if you run heavier workloads or many browser tabs at once.

What does the i5-2400 3.10 GHz turbo to 3.40 GHz mean for real use?

The four cores run at 3.10 GHz base and can lift a single core to 3.40 GHz for short bursts, giving snappy response in office apps and light content tasks.

How does the Gigabit Ethernet port limit network speed in practice?

The integrated Gigabit Ethernet caps wired throughput at 1 Gb/s, so large file copies over LAN will not exceed that link speed.
