Purpose-built desktop

The Dell OptiPlex 790 Mini Tower is a new desktop computer aimed at home-office and student users who need a ready-to-run Windows 10 Pro system. It ships with a genuine Intel Core i7-2600 quad-core processor operating at 3.40 GHz with a 3.90 GHz turbo frequency. Eight gigabytes of DDR3 memory and a dual-drive layout combining a 128 GB solid-state drive with a 2 TB hard drive provide both responsiveness and capacity.

Build integration

The Mini Tower chassis uses a standard 265 W power supply and includes a DVD±RW optical drive, integrated Gigabit Ethernet and a USB wireless dongle for network connectivity. A keyboard and mouse are bundled, so the only required addition is a display. Two memory slots accept DDR3 DIMMs up to a 16 GB total, while 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch bays are already occupied by the installed drives, leaving no free drive bays for further internal storage expansion.

Sustained operation

The 265 W power supply and Intel HD Graphics 2000 are sized for typical office workloads rather than continuous heavy compute or gaming. Under prolonged multi-threaded tasks the quad-core CPU will remain within its thermal envelope, but the modest power budget and integrated graphics limit sustained performance for video rendering or modern 3D applications. Buyers who need dedicated graphics headroom or higher continuous power draw should consider a different platform.

Questions about this item

How long can the i7-2600 hold its 3.90 GHz turbo before the 265 W power supply hits its limit?

The 265 W unit powers the i7-2600, 8 GB DDR3, 128 GB SSD, 2 TB HDD and DVD±RW simultaneously, so sustained turbo on all four cores remains within the supply's continuous rating.

What noise and heat should I expect from the Mini Tower when the i7-2600 runs at 3.90 GHz all day?

The stock chassis fan and CPU cooler keep the i7-2600 at safe temperatures under full load; the 265 W supply fan adds a low, steady airflow noise typical of an office Mini Tower.

Do I need to buy a monitor separately to use the Intel HD Graphics 2000 output?

Yes, the system ships without a monitor; you must provide a display with VGA, DisplayPort or DVI input to connect to the integrated graphics ports.
