Refurbished OptiPlex 960 SFF desktop

This refurbished Dell OptiPlex 960 is a small form factor desktop built for business use. It ships with an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 processor at 3.0 GHz, 4 GB of memory, a 160 GB 7200 RPM hard drive and Windows 7 Professional 64-bit pre-installed. Integrated Intel GMA 4500 graphics and a DVDRW drive complete the configuration. A 235 W power supply powers the system.

Buyers needing legacy Windows 7 compatibility

The machine suits organisations maintaining older 64-bit applications that require Windows 7 Professional. It is not suited for users who need modern operating system support, greater than 4 GB of memory or faster storage interfaces than SATA. Buyers who want more storage capacity or a dedicated graphics card should look at other systems.

LGA 775 socket limits CPU upgrades

The processor uses an LGA 775 socket on the Intel Q45 Express chipset, so any CPU change is restricted to that platform. Memory slots are fully populated with 4 GB across four slots, leaving no room for expansion without removing existing modules. The 235 W power supply also constrains the addition of power-hungry components.

Questions about this item

What speed does the Gigabit Ethernet port cap at in practice?

The Gigabit Ethernet port runs at 10/100/1000 Mbps, so the practical ceiling is 1000 Mbps.

What drive bays and form factor does the OptiPlex 960 SFF chassis provide for upgrades?

The small form factor chassis uses SATA connections for the 160 GB 7200 RPM hard drive and the DVDRW optical drive.

How is the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 installed, and what step is often missed?

The processor fits the LGA 775 socket; the step often missed is locking the retention lever fully after seating the CPU.
