Ready for office and study

The Dell OptiPlex 990 Mini Tower is a desktop computer built for student and home-office workloads. It ships with a 64-bit Intel 2nd Gen i5-2400 processor running at 3.10 GHz with a 3.4 GHz turbo boost. Sixteen GB of DDR3 memory and a dual-drive layout of 256 GB solid-state storage plus 2 TB hard-drive capacity come pre-installed. Windows 10 Professional 64-bit, a USB keyboard and a USB mouse are included in the box.

Replaces older desktops

This system upgrades machines that still rely on smaller hard drives or less than 16 GB of RAM. The jump is worth it when daily tasks such as web browsing, document editing and media playback feel sluggish or when storage runs low. The 256 GB SSD accelerates boot and application launch while the 2 TB hard drive holds large file libraries. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000 and a 265 W power supply limit the machine to light graphical workloads.

Fits a standard mini-tower chassis

The motherboard uses 240-pin DIMM slots for DDR3 memory and provides 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drive bays for the included SSD and hard drive. A 16X DVD±RW drive occupies the optical bay. Gigabit Ethernet handles wired networking. The 265 W power supply and integrated graphics mean no discrete GPU is supported. Buyers who need more storage bays, higher graphics performance or a different memory generation should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

Will a standard 240-pin DDR3 module fit the memory slots on this OptiPlex 990?

Yes, the system uses 240-pin DDR3 DIMM slots and ships with 16 GB already installed.

What is the correct order for installing Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit on the 256 GB SSD when a 2 TB hard drive is also present?

Boot the installer, select the 256 GB solid-state drive as the destination, and let setup create its own partitions; the 2 TB drive will appear as a second volume after first log-in.

Can the 265 W power supply support a graphics card upgrade later, or must it be replaced?

The 265 W unit only powers the integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000; adding a discrete card will require a higher-wattage supply that fits the mini-tower chassis.
