Ready-to-use desktop for home and office

The Dell OptiPlex 990 Mini Tower arrives with Windows 10 Pro installed and a USB keyboard and mouse in the box. An Intel Core i7-2600 quad-core processor running at 3.40 GHz with 3.80 GHz Turbo Boost handles everyday multitasking. Eight gigabytes of DDR3 memory and a 256 GB SSD plus 1 TB hard drive provide responsive boot times and ample file storage.

Storage and expansion limits

The 2.5-inch 256 GB solid-state drive and 1 TB mechanical drive occupy the available drive bays, so adding further internal storage requires removing an existing drive. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000 drives basic display output but does not support modern gaming or GPU-accelerated workloads. The 265 W power supply restricts the addition of discrete graphics cards or other high-draw expansion cards.

Mini-tower practicality

A black and silver mini-tower chassis fits on or under a desk while leaving room for the included 16X DVD±RW drive. Gigabit Ethernet provides wired network connectivity without extra adapters. Four DIMM slots support up to 16 GB of DDR3 memory for future upgrades. The integrated sound card covers routine audio needs without a separate card.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 256 GB SSD plus 1 TB hard drive or one of the larger solid-state options listed?

The 256 GB solid-state drive holds the operating system and frequent programmes for quick startup, while the 1 TB hard drive adds 1000 GB of space for large files; larger SSD choices replace the smaller SSD but keep the same hard drive.

What does the 3.40 GHz base clock and 3.80 GHz turbo mean for everyday speed?

The Intel Core i7-2600 runs at 3.40 GHz normally and can lift a single core to 3.80 GHz for short bursts, giving snappy response in office apps and web browsing.

How fast is the Gigabit Ethernet port in real use?

The integrated Gigabit Ethernet connector supports up to 1000 megabits per second, so wired network transfers are limited by that link speed.
