Dell OptiPlex 990 SFF Desktop

This Dell OptiPlex 990 small form factor desktop is built for everyday office tasks and home use. An Intel quad-core i5 processor running at 2.9 to 3.30 GHz handles document editing, web browsing and light multitasking. The 8 GB of DDR3 memory and integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000 support standard productivity applications. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit is pre-installed for immediate setup.

Compact Chassis and Connectivity

The small form factor case saves desk space while fitting a 3.5-inch 500 GB SATA hard drive and a DVD±RW optical drive. Gigabit Ethernet provides a wired network link and a USB WiFi adapter adds wireless flexibility. Video output relies on the integrated graphics ports on the rear panel. A USB keyboard and mouse are included for a complete desktop bundle.

Included Accessories and Software

The package supplies a USB keyboard and mouse so no separate input devices are needed. A power cord is also provided for immediate operation. Windows 10 Professional 64-bit arrives pre-installed, removing the need for a separate licence purchase or manual installation. The DVD±RW drive allows software installation or data archiving from optical media.

Questions about this item

What SATA revision does the 500 GB hard drive use, and what throughput does that cap in practice?

The 3.5 inch 500 GB drive connects through a SATA interface; the board's SATA ports limit sustained transfer to the SATA revision supported by the chipset.

What physical clearance does the Small Form Factor case impose on the 3.5 inch drive and half-height optical bay?

The SFF chassis accepts one 3.5 inch SATA drive and a half-height DVD±RW in the slim optical bay; full-height cards will not fit.

How is the WiFi USB adapter installed, and what step is often missed?

Plug the supplied WiFi USB adapter into any free USB port, then install the driver from Windows 10 Pro or the Dell support site; skipping the driver install leaves the adapter unrecognised.
