Half-height blade server with dual 18-core Xeon Gold 6150 CPUs, 16 GB DDR4, dual 10 Gb network ports and iDRAC9 Enterprise management
Installed Memory Size 16GB
SSD (Installed) No
The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server built for data-centre workloads such as virtualisation, private cloud and high-performance computing. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6150 processors, each running at 2.70 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency and 18 cores, delivering up to 56 cores per server. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory is installed across two modules, and the platform supports up to 1.5 TB total capacity.
The blade form factor relies on the shared cooling infrastructure of a PowerEdge MX or M1000e chassis, so individual fan noise and power draw are managed at enclosure level rather than by the server itself. The PERC S140 integrated controller handles SATA and NVMe storage with RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 support, while the Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 Gb network daughter card provides high-throughput connectivity. A Matrox G200 GPU with 8 MB video memory supplies basic console output.
This configuration replaces older half-height blades that lack NVMe support or dual 10 Gb networking, and it upgrades from single-socket or lower-core-density platforms when workloads demand more parallel threads. The jump is worth it for teams consolidating virtual machines or scaling memory-intensive applications within existing chassis slots. Buyers who need local GPU acceleration, Fibre Channel connectivity or more than two 2.5-inch drive bays will find this blade does not meet those requirements.

Other versions of this model
Slide the M640 into an empty bay of a compatible PowerEdge MX or M1000e chassis until the latch clicks, then enable the iDRAC9 Enterprise licence in the Lifecycle Controller before deploying workloads.
The server arrives with 16 GB in two 8 GB DDR4 2666 MHz Registered ECC modules occupying two of the 16 slots; additional DDR4 Registered ECC DIMMs can be added up to the 1.5 TB limit when capacity demands grow.
The 10 Gb dual-port Broadcom 57810S-K network daughter card will saturate before the 36 total cores reach thermal throttle, making network throughput the first bottleneck.
