1U dual-socket rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R630 is a 1U rack server with two Intel Xeon E5-2637 V3 quad-core processors running at 3.5 GHz. It arrives with 96 GB of DDR4 memory installed across 24 DIMM slots and a PERC H730 RAID controller with 2 GB cache. Dual 750 W hot-swap power supplies provide redundancy.

Upgrade path and fit

The system supports up to 1536 GB of DDR4 memory, so the jump from the installed 96 GB is worthwhile for workloads that exceed current capacity. The H730 controller handles RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60, replacing simpler controllers that lack RAID 50 or 60 support. Eight 2.5-inch hot-plug bays accept SAS or SATA drives, but no drives or trays are included.

Build integration

Three PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated PERC slot are available for additional networking or acceleration cards. The iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller enables remote management out of the box. A four-port 1 GbE daughter card is fitted, while optional 10 GbE NDCs can be added for higher throughput. The Matrox G200 video output covers basic console access.

Questions about this item

What are the exact dimensions of the Dell PowerEdge R630 1U server?

The server measures 26.8 inches long, 17.44 inches wide, and 3.4 inches high, weighing 58 lbs, designed for a standard 1U rack space.

How are the CPUs installed and what is the common mistake?

Install both E5-2637 V3 processors into the two sockets on the system board, applying thermal paste evenly; the frequent error is seating only one CPU or using mismatched stepping codes.

Which components will need replacement over the life of this R630?

The two 750W redundant power supplies and the CMOS battery on the motherboard are the primary parts that degrade and require periodic replacement.
