A 1U rack server with dual 12-core Xeon Gold 5118 CPUs, 128 GB DDR4 ECC memory, PERC H730P RAID controller and two 400 GB SATA SSDs
The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rackmount server built for dense scale-out computing. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with 12 cores. The system includes 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 8 modules. A PERC H730P storage controller with 2 GB cache manages the installed drives.
This server suits environments that need high compute density in a single rack unit, such as virtualisation clusters or cloud workloads. The chassis provides eight 2.5-inch drive bays, populated here with two 400 GB SATA SSDs. Buyers who require more than eight internal drive bays will need a different chassis. Workloads demanding GPU acceleration are not supported by this 1U form factor.
The critical specification is the eight-bay 2.5-inch front chassis, which sets the maximum number of internal drives. The installed PERC H730P controller supports SAS and SATA drives with RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Two 400 GB SATA SSDs are included, leaving six bays available for expansion. Network connectivity uses a quad-port daughter card with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports.

Other versions of this model
Both refer to the same Xeon Gold 5118; the 2.3 GHz is the base clock and the 3.2 GHz is the maximum turbo frequency, so the installed processors already provide both speeds.
Eight 16 GB registered ECC modules running at 2400 MHz fill eight of the 24 slots, giving 128 GB of error-correcting memory with 16 slots still free for expansion up to 3 TB.
The controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through at 12 Gb/s SAS and 6 Gb/s SATA; the installed 400 GB SATA SSDs will run at the SATA 6 Gb/s link speed.
